As the fastest growing site in the history of the Web, YouTube promises endless new opportunities for amateur video, political campaigning, entertainment formats, and viral marketing-a clip culture that has seemed to outpace both cinema and television. With more than seventy million unique users a month and approximately eighty million videos online, this brand-name video distribution platform holds the richest repository of popular culture on the Internet. YouTube has come to epitomize the possibilities of digital culture. To Allen’s lasting chagrin, his remarks were not only recorded - but instantly made available to a large audience on YouTube. Allen not only introduced Sidarth, a Virginia native, to the crowd as “macaca,” but went on to welcome him to America, marking out a difference between the “real America,” represented by Allen and his followers, and some other America to which, he implied, Sidarth belonged. Nonetheless, the intent to offend the dark-skinned young man and to expose him to the ire of the crowd was transparent in Allen’s comments as they were recorded on tape.
